We get a lot of early Mustangs here at Carroll Street Classics, so it takes a special example to really impress us. This 1966 Mustang GT coupe certainly does that as it has had a high-end restoration that resulted in a car that looks as if it drove right out of the brochure and into our showroom. The rock-solid and arrow-straight body on this coupe was refinished in its correct Wimbledon White, and being a GT it features the grille-mounted fog lights, chrome outlet dual exhaust exiting from the valence panel, "GT" gas filler cap and badges, and (to be installed) rocker panel "Mustang" stripes. This car also features the handsome, factory-optional "styled steel wheels" wearing white wall tires. The various chrome and stainless-steel trim is brilliant as well, while the underside is also clean and solid, a testament to the car's excellent care and low mileage. Inside, the Mustang has the standard interior with the optional center console. The dash features full instruments along with an aftermarket tachometer. Everything from the headliner down to the carpet looks and feels factory fresh. The factory AM radio still resides in the dash, further keeping the car just like it was when it rolled out of the factory. Under the hood is the original "A code" 289 cubic-inch 4-barrel V8 that was rated at a peppy 225 hp. It sends those horses through the factory 4-speed gearbox and on to the 3.00-geared, limited-slip rear end. Out on the road, the 289 pulls strong and sounds great doing so, while the manual steering and manual front disc brakes add to the engaging character of this sporty steed. This ‘Mustang GT is turn-key ready and it’s easy to imagine enjoying this 1960s icon while hitting your favorite Cars and Coffee or taking a nice weekend ride along the coast or through twisting mountain roads. Given its combination of condition, desirable features and affordable pricing, we don’t expect this classic Mustang to last long.
