Description

Although the third-generation Corvette (aka the “C3”) was produced from 1968 through 1982, the early ones tend to matter the most to enthusiasts. This was when the C3’s performance was at its peak, with powerful and high-revving small blocks as well as muscle-bound big blocks available. Although the cachet of a big block can't be denied, the potent small blocks put less weight on the front end, making for more agile handling. Here we have a 1968 Corvette still wearing its intriguing color combination of its mostly original Silverstone Silver paint with an all-original Gunmetal interior. You'll also note it wears the factory optional "Special" wheel covers as well as non-factory Charcoal accent stripes that were added early on, seemingly inspired by the Baldwin-Motion modified Corvettes of the time. A set of Firestone Firehawk white-lettered tires round out the car's considerable curb appeal while a set of old-school redline tires are included as well. A binder that accompanies the car includes the original sales order, window sticker, Protect-O-Plate and owner's manual. Inside, the rare and handsome Gunmetal color is welcome change from the much more common black. This being a late-production 1968 means it has the "half-year-only" door pull handles. These were likely a response to people being annoyed with the awkward to grab handle hidden in the upper door area. It also has B pillar-mounted interior lights, another unique feature. Look closely and you'll notice crystal-clear gauges and the original, optional AM/FM radio. Everything works, even the clock. Swing up the long hood and you'll see that this 'vette packs the optional "L79" version of the 327 V8 that's rated at a stout 350 horsepower. That power runs through a Muncie M21 close-ratio 4-speed and out to the 3.70-geared Positraction rear end. This is an all-numbers-matching powertrain. The car starts quickly and runs great, running smoothly (and very quickly, if you choose) through the 4-speed’s gears. Power steering and power disc brakes add to the ease and enjoyment of wheeling around this classic Corvette. To say this car is fun to drive is an understatement. The sound of that high-compression 327 when leaned on is only matched by the thrill of its rapid acceleration. All told, this is well-documented and desirable 1968 Corvette L79 coupe that we'd call a very nice driver.
