(COPO) Central Office Production Order.
This "Brass Hat" 66 Corvette Coupe describes this Silver Pearl
L-79 optioned 327/350hp air conditioned coupe. Owned by
one of the top GM executives, Mr. Joe Pike was one of the first
brand managers at General Motors. Joe was a national sale
promotion manager for Chevrolet, setting up a national
organization of Corvette clubs and editor of Corvette News ( now
known as Corvette Quarterly). Pike also helped the image of the
Corvette like naming colors of the cars after famous race
tracks, such as Sebring Silver, or Nassau Blue. Pike
was the one who suggested offering leather upholstery and
wooden steering wheels in the early 60's imitating leading
European sports cars. Joe suffered a stroke in 1990 and
was confined to a wheel chair. He died in 1994, just
before the opening of the National Corvette Museum. He was
a great, progressive leader for GM that paved the way to the
advance the quality of these now, antique marvels. This
particular car was Joe's personal company car, ordered by him
personally. Zone 00, dealer code 500, GM Motors, factory,
Detroit MI, ordered 3/16/66. Order sheet: Silver pearl,
986 paint code, med. blue leather seats, L-79 optioned,
327/350hp, M21 close ratio, 4 spd., with 3.70 Posi traction
axle. AC, hazard warning switch, off road exhaust, now,
the car has side mounted exhaust. Full transistorized
ignition system. Original wheels, wood telescopic wheel, PW, nylon gold line tires, PB, am/fm
radio. This central office production order was to Joe
Pike at the factory address, which makes the car very
interesting with the documentation. We have the dealer
that it was shipped to Nov. 7, 1966 with 12,718 miles. Mr.
Pike's company car was driven 12,000 miles in a 6 month time.
Nice to get a new car twice a year! We have some photos of
the repaint approx. 18 or so years ago. Also, some info as
to where the orig. block may be. Presently, orig. trans
and rear, orig. radiator, alternator and many of the components.
Correct Holley carb,- (service replacement), orig. alum intake,
correct 202 fuelie heads. Orig. over flow canister.
Paint is overall very nice, slight signs of orig. bonding strip
lines straight body. Doors open and close nicely, hood,
headlight buckets have great lines. Appears to be
refinished in possibly lacquer paint. Only a couple of
small chips on the headlight buckets. Orig. leather seats
and appears to be all original interior. All the gauges
work except the clock. radio is inoperable. Back up lights
work, AC needs a charge, interior headliner in super nice, dome
light works, heater works. Performance wise...it drives
awesome! Shifts smooth and drives straight. Not a
rattle, very tight. The underside has a heavy rubberized
undercoating. Appears to have some scale, but overall
solid. Reliable, a great driving machine and good looking.
She won't mind giving up her side of the garage... |
