The 1940 Ford coupe was part of
the 1937 to 1940 family of coupes that reflected the Art Deco
period of automotive design, with its sweeping, bold fenders and
beltline and minimal exterior accouterments. This 40 Dodge
D14 Business coupe was purchased in PA from a private collector
whom has dozens of pre-war vehicles. This fine example was
purchased for the daughter who was attending college in 1939.
The car was intended for her school use and driven in only fair
weather, no winters and garage kept. The daughter drove
until approx. 1990 at the age of 73. At that point, the
car had been sitting for approx. 10 yrs. at which she decided to
sell it. The paint was old and faded, in fact kind of
chalky, yet, without rust and a only a couple of small
imperfections like small scrapes on the passenger side and a
couple minor dents in the fender from her pulling to close in
the garage. After being sold in 2000, the car had been
repainted. The new owner spent the last 10 yrs
refurbishing the car to it's originality. The chrome had
been tarnished and dull, yet everything intact. All the
dings and dents were removed and the car was refinished in
single stage enamel. The chrome was completely restored,
polished bright work and all the glass remains original to the
car and considered in fantastic condition. The exterior
door handles were replaced with NOS as well as the tail light
bezels. Trim plate re chromed front an drear bumpers,
front grille guards and the entire front grille was restored.
New wide white radials tires within the past couple yrs.
Interestingly, the car indicates only 37,148 pampered miles,
with the same owner up til 1990. After noticing the car at
the Hershey Fall event, my interest was peaked, so I called the
3rd owner and he shared the story of how the second owner had
rebuilt the engine, and after a 20 minute test drive and that
impressed of how well the car ran, is when he bought the car and
stored it. Boasting this car would drive anywhere, the
engine is so quiet, it whispers down the road! The heater
was an option back then and works great, am push button radio in
inoperative, gauges all work, light, dual trumpet horns still
flamboyantly loud. completely orig. instrument panel with wood
grain dash, ivory knobs in good condition, fresh air cowl vent
is operational, windows roll up and down with ease. The
window gaskets are in good condition. Restored mohair
seat, very comfortable, orig. rubber floor mats, orig.
headliner, restored door panels and arm rest bases. All
orig. door hardware, restored wood grain on the tops of the
inside doors to match the orig. wood grain on the dash. No
cracks in the orig. steering wheel, wipers work great, 6 volt
system, new battery, new exhaust, new brake lining. The
spotless rust free trunk is enormous which was intended for the
traveling business man's wares. Locking compartment to
access the trunk on the passenger side behind the seat.
Spare tire with vinyl curtain cover, snapping behind the
driver's seat. The under carriage on this 40 Dodge is
solid as a rock. Frame, floor boards, running boards,
inside all the fenders are considered excellent condition.
Orig. keys, Owner's Manual, complete owner history since new.
This business coupe has handsome flowing body lines outside and
plenty of room inside. Must be seen, a car in this
condition is hard to find. Turn the key, pull the choke,
hit the starter and you're on your way to an unforgettable
experience back in time. Museum quality example. |
