A little Plymouth history: Chevrolet, Ford, and
Plymouth all entered 1956 with mildly restyled facelifts of the
new cars introduced the year before. The new Ford and Chevys
relied mainly on revamped side trim, grilles, and tail lamps to
set them apart from 1955's cars. Like the others, Plymouth
retained the old body, but added new quarter panels that
dramatically changed the overall shape of the body to what was
referred to as "airfoil" styling. One inch longer than the
1955 and slimmer and taller, the airfoil fenders trailed off
into space "leaving no question that the car is racing forward,"
according to the data book. Slashed at a steep angle, the
fenders gave the car a "flying away" look when viewed from the
side or the rear. Airfin taillights, slim and tapered to
emphasize the height and sweep of the rear fenders, and a
“jet-like tub” back-up lamp housing all emphasized the
aeronautical theme of the car. New body moldings, especially
those of the Belvedere, emphasized the “aerodynamic, ready for
take off” look. Topping off each rear fender was the new
"Forward Look" emblem on Belvedere and Sport Suburban models.
The 1955 Plymouth had shocked the motoring world by sticking the
automatic transmission control lever through the dashboard near
the driver's right knee cap. For 1956, Plymouth drivers had to
learn to use their left hand for this operation as Plymouth (and
the rest of the corporation's cars) went to push-button shifting
on automatic cars. First time offered for sale,
directly from from a private collection, this 56 Belvedere has
been passed down through the family, and only 2 owners through
out it's life time. Always garaged, no winters and
beautifully preserved, this 4 dr. hard top has only 66,044
actual miles since new. Only 1 single repaint a few
yrs. ago, exceptionally nice, and the body was completely rust
free, factory colors, yellow and black with white painted roof.
Complete tinted glass, all original and considered in excellent
condition. Bright work and stainless is orig. and has been
polished when the car was refinished, re chromed front and rear
bumpers, bumper guards. This car has an amazing style
about it, wide stainless mouldings above the windshield,
beautiful flowing body lines, high attention to stainless,
paint, fit and finish. Body panels are orig. new factory
wide white bias ply tires with orig. hub caps. Re chromed
hood and trunk ornament, rust free door bottoms.
Interestingly, the back windows roll down. The rear
quarter vent folds down first, as the window rolls down.
Doors open and close with no effort. All orig. weather
strip, orig. paint in the door jambs. A plastic filler
piece divides between the back of the front seat, a most unusual
trim piece we've ever seen. New carpet, yet everything
else is original in the interior of this car. Black and
white fabric, dash board, instrument cluster, door panels, rear
pkg. tray are all original and considered in extremely nice
condition. The rear seat appears like it's never been
used. The headliner is exceptionally nice and replicates
the stars are above. The original steering wheel is in
perfect condition. The interior is amazing, not faded or
soiled, only a tiny fray on the center of the driver's
side seat from getting in and out. The engine compartment
is as clean as a whistle and runs extremely well. No
modifications, never rebuilt, just finished when the car was
repainted. Nice engine bay detailing, PS, PB, orig.
radiator, orig. generator, vacuum operated wipers. 2
barrel carb with an orig. air cleaner element. Nice clean
trunk, orig. spare tire, jack and rubber floor mat. The
bottom side has anew dual exhaust system, never any rust issues
what so ever. If you're looking for a really nice,
straight rust free orig. low mileage 56 Plymouth 4 dr hard top,
this car is most likely the best orig. example out there.
Turn key, drives anywhere and a great investment that you can
enjoy.
