One of the newest categories in the classic car hobby is the Rat Rod. Designed to look rough around the edges with worn paint and even some surface rust on the body, a Rat Rod typically hides a powerful powertrain and upgraded suspension and braking components under its worn-out skin. The interior can be anything from a blanket loosely covering the original decrepit seats to plush leather seating borrowed from a luxury car. Here we have a 1936 Ford pickup Rat Rod that is very likely something you won’t see at your local cruise night or Cars and Coffee. The body was rock solid to begin with (as seen in the "before" photos) and was given a custom finish to provide a very convincing "patina" effect. Look closely and you’ll see a few eyebrow-raising details, such as the Mercedes-Benz hood ornament and emblems and a “Turbo Diesel” badge on the front bumper. That will make sense as you read further. Inside, it’s built for comfort, as a leather split bench seat with fold-down center armrests dominates the cabin. A set of full gauges monitor everything from oil pressure to voltage. There is no tach, however, but one is not needed for this powertrain. There are also power windows and heat. The gear selector may look familiar to anyone who’s driven a 1980s Mercedes, and it provides another hint as to the unusual powertrain of this unique truck. Under the hood is not a Chevy 350 or Ford 351, but rather a turbodiesel inline five from a 1985 Mercedes-Benz. It’s the popular 2.5-liter unit that served duty in the midsize cars as well as the flagship S Class. It sends the power to the Chevy S10 rear end through a Mercedes’ 4-speed automatic. As expected, it isn’t exactly fast like a built small block, but runs great and has plenty of low- and mid-range power that’s typical of a turbocharged diesel. And it gets good fuel economy as well. This is a cruiser that devours long highway trips while sipping fuel, so no worries about attending those far-away car shows. It handles and brakes confidently, making it a pleasure to run around town as well. For more information or to schedule time to see this fun Rat Rod, just give us a call at 603-627-5595. Financing is offered through our approved lender, interesting trades are welcome and enclosed shipping can be arranged.
