We like a mid-50s Chevy as much as the next car guy (or gal), but there's something to be said about its Oldsmobile relative. As the Chevy's more upmarket (and more expensive) cousin, the Olds had fancier styling inside and out, as well as a larger, more powerful V8. Indeed, Oldsmobile's "Rocket 88" that debuted for 1949 was considered by some to be the first muscle car thanks to its potent (for the time) output and the car's relatively light weight. As the mid-1950s approached, Oldsmobiles got more luxurious, more stylish and more powerful. Here we have a 1955 Olds 88 that received a complete restoration during the 1990s. With just over 3,000 miles put on it since, it still presents extremely well today. A binder full of detailed receipts and notes accompanies the car. This great 88 has been shown and judged at some prestigious events. It has won a National first prize award at an AACA event and scored 916 out of a possible 1,000 points at an Oldsmobile Club of America event. Refinished in its head-turning and original color scheme of Burlingame Red and Polar White, the 88's rock-solid body sparkles, while the various chrome accents all show in equally nice condition. A set of 15-inch, 5-spoke chrome wheels wearing whitewall radials complete the tasteful look. Inside, the steering wheel and chrome-finished dash look nearly showroom new, and even the original AM radio still works. A few notable upgrades have been installed, such as electric wipers, a Sun tachometer, an AM/FM/CD stereo (hidden in the glove box) , a Lokar gear selector and a Lokar gas pedal. The reupholstered interior looks and feels fantastic, with the soft cloth seating providing non-stick comfort on those hot summer cruise days. And there's plenty of room here for friends and family. Under the hood is the original 324 V8, now fitted with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and a custom dual exhaust with old-school "Smitty" glass pack mufflers. The engine smoothly sends its power to the rear wheels via a TH350 automatic transmission. The original drum brakes have been rebuilt while the rebuilt suspension features a 1.5-inch drop, giving the Oldsmobile a cool, slightly nose-down attitude. Underway, the 88 drives smoothly and is a breeze to handle, thanks to power steering and power brakes, features that weren't necessarily a given way back then. Step into it and the 88 moves out with gusto, with the staccato rumble of the duals adding the perfect '50s mild custom soundtrack. As a 1950s Olds is quite a bit more expensive to restore than a "Tri-Five" Chevy, you won't see nearly as many of these beauties at a Cars and Coffee or Sunday car show. With its combination of style, comfort, rarity and performance, this Oldsmobile 88 is ready to provide miles of smiles to its next family. Please call Carroll Street Auto at (603) 627-5595 for further information or to schedule time to view this handsome, turn-key 1955 Oldsmobile 88. Financing is offered through our approved lender, trades are welcome and enclosed shipping can be arranged.
