Check out a cruise night or a car show and you're bound to see some examples of the very popular "Tri-Five" (1955, 1956, 1957) Chevrolets. Signaling the end of stodgy styling and the beginning of available V8 power, it's no wonder these cars have legions of fans both young and old. Back then, the Bel Air was the top-of-the-line model and featured fancier exterior trim as well as plusher seating and door panel trim. Here we have a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Townsman wagon that started life out as a rock-solid 210 model that was then restored and upgraded to a Bel Air trim. Done to the most exacting detail, this high-end, frame-off restoration was performed on all-original sheet metal. Originally painted Inca Silver, the car was given a beautiful respray in era-correct Matador Red accented with an Imperial Ivory roof. All the correct Bel Air exterior trim, including the iconic silver anodized side treatment and gold anodized grille insert, are present. All the glass is in excellent condition and all the chrome and stainless-steel trim, as well as the window rubber weather stripping, is all new. Correct wheel covers and wide whitewall tires complete the “fresh off the showroom floor” look and feel. Underneath, it’s so pristine that it earns our “lasagna car” designation – it’s so clean that we would gladly eat lasagna off of the floor pans and frame. From the headliner to the carpet and everywhere in between, the interior looks showroom fresh as well and features the correct two-tone scheme. The unique Bel Air-specification upholstery is stunning, as is the steering wheel, dash trim and various chrome and stainless-steel hardware. The seats are firm and very comfortable, ideal for those weekend road trips and even a night out at a drive-in theatre should you be lucky enough to find one. Under the broad hood is an era-correct 283 2-barrel V8 that runs through a two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. The powertrain is smooth, quiet and quite peppy for a small eight. Power steering makes it easy to park and maneuver this big wagon while the manual brakes provide good stopping power. In other words, this classic Chevy drives as good as it looks.
