THIS CLASSIC CAN BE BID ON AUG. 1-21 AT OWLS HEAD AUTO AUCTION, MAINE Back in 1955, the Ford Thunderbird debuted as a more luxurious, more powerful two-seat convertible alternative to Chevrolet’s Corvette (which initially was only available with a straight six coupled to an automatic). The “baby bird” ran just three years, 1955 through 1957, and with its stylish design and V8 power was the car of choice for the sports, radio and screen stars of the day. On offer here from a private estate and having just one owner for the past 20 years is a 1957 Thunderbird that was the subject of an older, high-quality restoration. Overall, the T-bird still presents very well although it has a few blemishes consistent with a classic that’s been driven and enjoyed, not just displayed. The rock-solid body was resprayed in the correct and original Raven black. A set of factory Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels, fitted with whitewall radial tires, add to the T-bird’s fantastic curb appeal. The latter is furthered accented with the original removable hardtop, complete with its iconic porthole window. Inside, the black and white upholstery looks great and the bench seat is still firm and is comfortable on long cruises. This baby bird is loaded too, with a telescopic steering wheel and full power features, including steering, brakes, windows and seat. The “Town and Country” station-seeking radio still resides in the dash, and the instruments, dash top and eye-catching “engine-turned” dash panel accent are in fine condition as well. Under the scooped hood is the original 312 cubic-inch V8 with its factory 4-barrel carburetion and factory “dress up” kit, which consists of the chrome air cleaner cover and ribbed rocker covers with the Thunderbird logo. The V8’s power runs through the original automatic transmission. Underway, the T-bird is smooth and peppy and wheeling this classic around is a breeze thanks to the power steering and brakes. New convertible soft top. Whether cruising with the top down on a balmy summer’s day or parked at a Cars and Coffee collecting compliments, this 1957 Thunderbird is ready to provide miles of smiles to its next owner.
