Before the mid-size muscle cars came on the scene, the full-size cars carried the torch for style and performance. Ford’s entry was the Galaxie 500 which offered a wide range of engine and luxury options. Here we have an incredible find – a 1962 Ford Galaxie that’s not only an all-original example, but one that’s packing the ultra-rare M-code “Super High Performance” 390 V8 fitted with triple two-barrel induction and rated at an impressive 401 horsepower. We got this beauty from a collector who has a thing for the early-to-late 1960s Galaxies. As with a few other of his amazing cars, this particular Galaxie was featured in “Legendary Ford” magazine. This pristine car, showing just 53,060 original miles, has to be seen to be believed. Turning heads in its original and rarely seen Chestnut color, this Galaxie further dazzles onlookers with its nice chrome and stainless-steel accents. A set of dog dish hubcaps indicate the no-frills nature of this big bruiser. The underside is also indicative of both the low mileage and the incredible car this special car has received since “Duke of Earl” was climbing up the charts. Back then, car interiors were dazzling, and this Galaxie is a great example of that with its original tri-tone upholstery and engine-turned metal accent on the dashboard. Everything from the headliner down to the carpet is what the car had when it rolled off the assembly line and it’s all in excellent condition. Even the original AM radio is here while an old-school oil pressure gauge sits under the dash, keeping tabs on the mighty 390. Discrete badges on the fenders announce the presence of that special V8. Make no mistake, this is not just a 390 with three two-barrel Holleys on it as it also boasts 11:1 compression as well as a solid lifter, high-performance camshaft. This was nothing less than the most powerful engine you could get in the 1962 Galaxie. That power runs to the rear wheels via a 3-speed manual with column shift, aka “three-on-the-tree”. You won’t find power steering or brakes in this car, as they were not available with the top-dog 390 V8. Underway, this car is a blast to drive; grabbing gears as you step into it and open up all six barrels on a stretch of wide-open road never gets old. Even just cruising around on your way to Cars and Coffee or to get ice cream with the kids is a kick in this classic muscle car.
