Description

Before the mid-size muscle cars came on the scene, the full-size cars carried the torch for style and performance. Ford’s entry was the Galaxie 500 which offered a wide range of engine and luxury options. Here we have an incredible find – a 1962 Ford Galaxie Club Coupe that’s not only a nearly all-original example, but one that’s packing the ultra-rare, top-of-the-line G-code “Super High Performance” 406 V8 fitted with triple two-barrel induction and rated at an impressive 405 horsepower. We got this beauty from a collector who has a thing for the early to late 1960s Galaxies. As can be seen here, he puts nothing but the rarest and most desirable versions, in the finest condition, in his collection. Looking like the sleeper that it is, this “Club Coupe” (meaning a sedan-style roof with a B pillars and framed side windows) is beautiful in its pristine Corinthian White paint on its all-original and arrow-straight body panels. The sharp Galaxie 500 trim on the sides adds a bit of pizzazz while the the dog dish hubcaps indicate the no-frills nature of this big bruiser. The underside is clean and dry and indicative of the great care this rare and special car has received from day one. Back then, car interiors were dazzling, and this Galaxie is a great example of that with its red and white two-tone upholstery scheme and engine-turned metal accent on the lower dashboard. Apart from recent seat covers, everything from the headliner down to the carpet is what the car had when it rolled off the assembly line and it’s all in excellent condition. Even the original AM radio is here while an old-school, column-mounted tach keeps tabs on the mighty 406. Discrete badges on the fenders announce the presence of that special, factory original V8. Make no mistake, this serious mill sports a solid-lifter camshaft and cranks out about one horsepower per cubic inch. And all that power runs to the rear wheels via a 4-speed stick and a limited-slip rear end packing a 4.11 gear set. You won’t find power steering or brakes in this car, as they were not available with the top-dog 406 V8. Underway, this car is a blast to drive -- grabbing gears as you step into it and open up all six barrels on a stretch of wide-open road never gets old. Even just cruising around on your way to Cars and Coffee or to get ice cream with the kids is a kick in this classic muscle car.
