Description

Before the mid-size muscle cars came onto the scene in the mid-1960s, the full-size cars from Ford, GM and Chrysler carried the torch for style and performance. Ford’s entry was the Galaxie 500 which offered a wide range of engine and luxury options. Midway through the 1963 model year, it adopted a sportier look with its semi-fastback roofline. Here we have an incredibly rare and desirable find – a 1963 1/2 Ford Galaxie 500 factory fitted with the solid-lifter 390 “Police Interceptor” V8 matched to a four-speed stick. This is an all-original example that we got from a collector who has a thing for early/mid-‘60s Galaxies. This amazing car must be seen and driven to be believed. Still wearing its original “Peacock Blue” hue, this Galaxie’s body is impressively solid and straight. It still has its original quarter panels and trunk floor, testament to the excellent care it has received since it rolled out of the showroom during the Kennedy administration. The underside is rock solid as it was rustproofed when new – you can see how clean the floor pan is where some of the undercoating was removed. The chrome and stainless-steel trim still shine brilliantly while the factory “spinner” style wheel covers finish off the curbside appeal. Inside the spacious cabin the original two-tone blue cloth upholstery is in fine shape, as are the door panels, dash and crack-free steering wheel. The four-speed stick shift sprouts from the floor, hinting at this bruiser’s high fun to drive factor. Note that there are no power steering or brakes here, as this car is pure, old-school muscle. Under the hood is the original 390 “Police Interceptor” V8 that was rated at 330 horsepower, 30 more horses than the hydraulic lifter 390. The power runs through the factory four-speed and on to the 3.50-geared rear end. When we got the car, we ran it through the shop and installed a new gas tank, new brakes (including lines) and a new clutch. We also had the carburetor rebuilt and tuned it up. As such, the Galaxy 500 starts and runs great, and the car is a blast to run through the gears.
