Description

“426 Hemi” Those seven characters speak volumes to muscle car enthusiasts. From its massive valve covers to its massive power and performance, the Dodge/Plymouth 426 Hemi is a thrill to see, to hear and of course, to experience when you mash the right pedal down. Here we have not only a very nice and nearly all-original Hemi-powered Dodge, but an extremely rare example. This 1966 Coronet 500 was ordered with that iconic 426 Hemi as well as other options that include the 727 automatic transmission, power steering, 3.23 Sure Grip differential, remote left sideview mirror, undercoating, tinted glass, AM radio with rear speaker and a 3-spoke “Sport” steering wheel. This car has been decoded by Mopar guru Galen Govier as one of 339 Dodge Coronet 500 2-door hardtops optioned with the Hemi engine. Of those, 203 were 4-speed manuals and 136 were, as with this car, equipped with the “TorqueFlite” automatic transmission. Other documentation includes the original Broadcast sheets that further prove the authenticity of this rare Mopar. Look over the angular body and you’ll notice the arrow straight and original body panels. Underneath, this car is rock solid and still has its original floors and trunk pan. The factory undercoating is peeling in some places, revealing the excellent metal it protected for all those years underneath. The factory Bright Red paint still gleams, as does the various chrome and stainless-steel trim. Dog dish hubcaps on color-matched steelies add to the Dodge’s stealthy street brawler vibe. The red interior is mostly original – the front seat covers and the carpeting have been replaced but otherwise it’s what the car had back in 1966 and is in impressive overall condition. Bucket seats and a center console came standard on the Coronet 500 and are nicely complemented by that optional Sport steering wheel with its wood-tone rim and metal spokes. A set of factory gauges minus a tach keep tabs on the “Elephant” V8 under the hood. Speaking of that massive mill, the Coronet’s original 426 Hemi with its dual-quad carburetor induction still sits under the hood and runs and drives fantastic. Underway, the Hemi is more docile at idle and slow speeds than you may expect, delivering fairly smooth performance even when you’re just cruising around town. Step into it and it bellows its approval, pinning you to the seat as it runs rapidly through the gears of the heavy-duty automatic. The Coronet handles and brakes well, just as you’d expect of a very well-cared for classic muscle car. Offering rarity along with stunning performance, this Hemi-powered Coronet 500 is an opportunity not to be missed.
