In the muscle car battle of the mid-‘60s, the Ford Fairlane was something of a dark horse. But that didn’t stop it from being a drag strip terror, especially in legendary “R-code” 427 form. Here we have a 1966 Fairlane that, although not a super-rare, super-expensive 427, still makes a big impression on the street and strip. Done up in the flavor of an old-school “gasser”, this fleet-footed Ford presents a lot of bang for the buck. Overall, the Fairlane presents as a nice driver-quality car. The body is arrow straight and the underside is solid. You can’t help but notice this high-riding Fairlane’s solid front axle setup while other features such as Torq Thrust wheels and a flat black hood topped with a classic teardrop hood scoop add to the nostalgic drag car vibe. Inside it’s an exercise in function over form. Weight is the enemy of quickness, so you’ll notice the Fairlane’s headliner, armrests and rear seat have all been deleted. A trio of under-dash instruments help keep tabs on the potent powerhouse as does a large Suntune II tach mounted traditionally on the steering column. A JVC AM/FM/CD head unit and a Sony 1,200-watt amplifier provide tunes. Under that hood scoop is a well-built 351 Cleveland V8. Plenty of high-performance parts are fitted, with highlights including an Edelbrock intake, a 4-barrel carb, a high-lift cam and a set of headers. All that power runs through a three-speed automatic with a B&M shifter. Manual steering and brakes further support the vintage, no-frills street thumper vibe.
