For many classic Mustang enthusiasts, the lean and mean ‘65/’66 fastbacks strike the loudest chord. The GT option takes it to the next level with its in-grille driving lights, trumpet-style “through the valence” dual exhausts and of course the GT badges and side stripes. Stunning in its beautiful “Blaze Red” high-end paint finish, this ’66 Mustang fastback restomod must be seen up close to appreciate the extensive amount of thought, time and money put in to make it gorgeous to look at and a blast to drive. This meticulous restoration boasts arrow-straight body panels, impressive panel fitment and a clean, rock-solid frame, floors and body panels. The gleaming chrome and various bright accents add to the eye candy factor, as do the added GT components, the factory “Styled Steel” wheels and a triple stripe that runs over the hood and rear deck. Inside, the factory optional “Pony” interior features the horse-embossed seats upgraded with more lateral support and headrests. There’s also the center console and tasteful and functional upgrades that include a factory wood-rimmed steering wheel, a full set of Auto Meter gauges and Classic Auto Air air-conditioning. Dynamat sound insulation was added for a quieter and cooler ride, even in the fully carpeted trunk. “High-Performance” V8 fender badges indicate the presence of not a K-code, but of a nonetheless well-built Ford 289 that uses an Edelbrock Performer package (aluminum heads, cam, intake) along with a Holley carb to make approximately 370 hp -- substantially more than a K-code. A set of headers and dual exhaust provide the right soundtrack while a heavy-duty aluminum radiator with an electric fan keeps things cool. An MSD ignition system provides plenty of powerful spark and reliability while a “Painless” wiring system neatly handles the electrics. The gearshift may look OEM, but look closer and you’ll see a five- not four-speed pattern on the old-school factory shift knob. That Ford Performance Super Duty T5 five-speed gearbox, matched to a heavy-duty clutch, provides both rapid acceleration and relaxed high-speed way cruising. Far from just a straight-line thriller, this restomod Mustang also boasts serious suspension upgrades, such as “Total Control” front coil-overs and a pair of front tower strut braces along with a pair of subframe connectors. Upgraded slotted front disc brakes also provide better than new performance. A binder packed full of receipts provides all the details of this incredible restomod.
