Description

There’s no denying the king of the boulevard status of a mid-‘60s Pontiac GTO. Pontiac’s muscle car was at the top of its game in terms of styling and performance. Indeed, Pontiac, with a play on the car’s name, dubbed it “The Great One” in advertisements of the day. Here we have the greatest of The Great Ones, an all original (powertrain, sheet metal, interior) 36k mile 1967 GTO with the top factory performance package further emphasized with the Royal Bobcat treatment. In other words, this “Goat” was ordered with the 400 H.O. engine option that was underrated at a laughably conservative 360 hp. More muscle was added when the car was new via the dealer-installed Ram Air hood scoop and Royal Bobcat performance upgrades. In addition to that potent V8, this incredibly well-documented car was also ordered up with plenty of other options, including factory Hurst-shifted 4-speed manual transmission, Saf-T-Track (limited slip) rear end, power steering and brakes, AM/FM radio (with rare in a convertible) rear speaker, the Rally gauge cluster, tinted glass, front/rear floor mats, wooden gear shift knob and the “notchback” bench seat with fold-down center armrest. That front seat configuration is rarely seen in the normally bucket seat-equipped GTO, making it one of just 759 4-speed cars to be so-equipped. And this is no taxi cab-like stripper bench setup, as the center armrest feature provides the best of both worlds – a luxury car vibe with the armrest down and three passenger capacity when it is flipped up. The dealership-installed options include the aforementioned Royal Bobcat performance upgrades (thinner head gaskets, a distributor advance curve kit, intake heat riser blocks, richer carb jetting and positive-locking rocker hold-down nuts for more accurate valve adjustments). Mounted on the front fenders, Royal Bobcat badges discreetly announce the added performance this GTO packs. Other dealer-added options include the Ram Air hood and the factory-correct 8-track player. Lastly, very rare Hurst wheels were fitted to the car back in the day, as were “Hurst equipped” badges. The body is remarkable with its original, all-steel body panels with proper alignment and impressively even gaps. With just one high-quality respray in the original Tyrol blue, this GTO looks fantastic with its white pinstripes and original white convertible top that is still in fine condition. All the chrome and bright trim, as well as the glass and window rubbers, are up to the very high standards set by the rest of the car Inside, it’s just as nice with the original black vinyl seats, door panels and dash top looking crisp. The simulated wood-rimmed sport steering wheel and the factory 8-track player were added at some point, likely when the other dealer-installed options were. The cherry on this incredible GTO sundae is the car’s paper work that includes PHS documentation, a window sticker copy and the high honor of being featured in “Muscle Car Review” magazine and a book titled “Muscle Car Color History GTO”. A binder contains those documents as well as the owner’s manual and even original oil change receipts from the 1960s. We have been in the business of selling beautiful and rare muscle cars for over 25 years and can state without hesitation that this “Holy Grail” 1967 GTO 400 H.O. convertible with its combination of originality, condition and rare options (that H.O. 400, the notchback bench seat and the Royal Bobcat treatment) is the nicest and most desirable example we have ever seen, be it through our doors, at a car show or at a high-end auction.
