By 1967, the GTO had plenty of street cred, as Pontiac’s muscle car was at the top of its game in terms of styling and performance. Indeed, Pontiac, with a play on the car’s name, dubbed it “The Great One” in advertisements of the day. Here we have a well-kept, 1967 GTO with the top factory performance engine, called the 400 H.O., that was underrated at a laughably conservative 360 hp. Notably, this nearly all original example has only had a few owners, one of whom had the car for nearly 40 years. The GTO still boasts all its original sheet metal, including the body panels, floors and trunk pans and back in the ‘80s it had one high-quality repaint in its factory-issued color of Regimental Red. A three-stage wet sand and buff paint correction was just done and as a result the GTO looks amazing front to back, top to bottom. The panels are arrow straight, the shut lines are even and the doors close with precision. Excellent chrome and stainless-steel trim as well as the excellent original tinted glass, supple rubber weatherstripping, T3 headlights and sharp factory Rally II wheels wearing white-lettered radials add to the impressive curbside presentation. Inside, the Pontiac’s original Parchment upholstery is in good condition while the headliner and carpet have been replaced. Option highlights include power steering, bucket seats, console, 3-spoke Sport steering wheel, wood shift knob and an AM radio with a power antenna. A factory 8-track player is included as well. Even the keys are originals with their “punch-outs” still intact. Yes, the original engine is still in the car with its correct, “born-with” heads and carb. It does have an aftermarket air cleaner. All that power runs to the rear wheels through the factory 4-speed and on to the 3.90-geared “Safe-T-Track” rear end. There is a new gas tank and mufflers, the GTO has been serviced and it runs and drives great. Given the impressive condition of this nearly all-original GTO, and the way the 400 H.O. pulls hard and clean, the 25,801 miles showing on the odometer may be actual, as opposed to 125,000 miles, but we can’t make that claim for certain, so we won’t. Regardless, not only are “they only original once”, but finding such a desirable car that’s in this kind of nearly all-original condition is truly a rare find.
