For many muscle car enthusiasts, the 1968-69 Chevelle has it all. The shark nose front end profile, the bulging rear quarters and upswept rear quarter windows all give the muscle-bound vibe, while a wide choice of available V8 engines under the hood back up the Chevelle’s powerful presence. These Chevelles were offered in base 300, fancier Malibu and tire-melting SS versions. Here we have a 1968 Chevelle Malibu that must be seen to be believed. The odometer shows just 77,919 miles, which we tend to believe given the amazing overall and nearly all-original condition of the car. It has received one very high-quality repaint in its original "Ash Gold" color (which is a green/gold hue) and that lustrous paint covers body panels that are clean and arrow straight. The original floor and trunk pans are impressively solid and along with the brilliant chrome and stainless-steel trim are indicative of the great care and minimal use the Malibu has received since new. A factory-issued set of 14-inch color-matched steel wheels wearing original dog dish hub caps and fitted with Goodyear radial whitewall tires add to this Malibu’s period-correct and head-turning looks. Swing open the door and you’ll swear you’ve been transported to 1971 as the original (and rare) cloth and vinyl upholstery looks like it’s from a well-kept, three-year-old car. It’s simply in amazing condition, as are the dash, door panels, headliner and carpet. Even the original AM radio is still in the dash. With the comfy front bench seat, up to six can ride in this cool Chevelle. Under the hood, this Chevelle originally had a straight six. Now, an era-correct 327 V8 provides performance more in keeping with this Chevelle’s muscular styling. Highlights of that powerhouse include 202 “Double Hump” heads, Edelbrock Performer intake, Demon 650 cfm carburetor with electronic choke, HEI electronic distributor, Corvette finned aluminum valve covers and a dual exhaust system that sounds awesome. A Powerglide automatic sends the power to a 3:08-geared rear end and on to the rear wheels. The Malibu has power steering and manual drum brakes. With that rumbling 327 and its spirited performance, this car is a blast to drive. And with its subtle color, whitewall tires and plain steel wheels, it’s a true “Sleeper” that you could imagine your grandmother driving back in the day.
