Representing Oldsmobile’s midsize muscle car, the 442 was marketed as a more upscale performance car. For example, while its rivals typically had a bench seat and around 325 horsepower as standard, the base 442 came with bucket seats and 350 horsepower (for manual-transmission cars, 325 for automatics) on its standard features list. For 1968, the previous somewhat boxy styling gave way to a more curvaceous look with beefy rear quarters and a swept-back roofline, while dual chrome “trumpet” exhausts released the rocking soundtrack of the 400-cube V8. Here we have a handsome 1968 Olds 442 coupe that boasts a matching-numbers powertrain as well as rock-solid original sheet metal and floors. The car has had one high-quality respray in the correct Scarlet hue, which looks dynamite. That vibrant color is nicely accented by the factory 442 fender stripes along with brilliant chrome and stainless steel trim. Classic, old-school Cragar S/S chrome wheels fitted with Cooper white-letter radials round out the 442's massive curb appeal. A binder full of receipts documents the great care the car has received. Inside, the mostly original interior looks great with the seats, door panels, headliner, carpet and dash all in fine condition. Among the many factory options on this car are the console, an AM/FM radio and Rally gauges (including the Tic Toc Tach). The trunk is so clean you could eat off it. Under the vented hood beats the heart of the original 400 cubic-inch, 4-barrel V8 which sends the power to the 12-bolt rear end via the original TH400 automatic transmission. Note that the engine was rebuilt in October of 2022 and the transmission was rebuilt in October of 2021. As such, the powertrain is fresh and the 442 runs strong and smooth, while power steering, power front disc brakes and the “F41” handling package all add to the enjoyment of driving this iconic muscle car.
