Representing Oldsmobile’s midsize muscle car, the 442 was marketed as a slightly more upscale performance car. For example, while its rivals typically had a bench seat and around 325 horsepower as standard, the base 442 came with bucket seats and 350 horsepower (for manual-transmission cars, 325 for automatics) on its standard features list. For 1968, the somewhat boxy styling was replaced with a more rounded look with especially beefy rear quarters while dual chrome “trumpet” exhausts released the rocking soundtrack of the 400-cube V8. Here we have a 1968 Olds 442 convertible that was acquired from a private collection. This is a real 442, not a clone, and boasts a matching-numbers powertrain. Original sheet metal and solid original floors and trunk pan. The factory Jade Gold paint looks great with the tan power convertible top and white factory front fender stripes. The front and rear bumpers have been replated with triple chrome plating and the other chrome and stainless trim also looks pristine. Oldsmobile Super Stock III wheels wearing BF Goodrich Radial T/As complete this boulevard bruiser’s look. Inside, the seats, door panels, headliner, carpet and dash are all in excellent condition. Among the many factory options on this car are tinted glass, the console with factory Hurst shifter, the convenience light group, simulated walnut sport steering wheel, AM/FM Wonderbar radio and Rally gauges (including the Tic Toc Tach). Inside the clean trunk is a full size spare and the original jack assembly. Under the vented hood beats the heart of the original 400 cubic-inch, 4-barrel V8 which sends the power to the 12-bolt rear end via the original Muncie “M20” wide-ratio 4-speed manual transmission. The 442 runs strong and smooth, while power steering, power brakes and the “F41” handling package all add to the enjoyment of driving this iconic muscle car. Whether cruising with the top down on the way to the beach or parked at a Sunday car show getting lots of looks, this 1968 Olds 442 drop top is tough to beat for fun on wheels.
