Description

For many Mustang enthusiasts, a ’69 or ’70 (essentially identical cars) Shelby GT500 is the ultimate Mustang. With its unique styling tweaks (including a scooped hood, scooped quarters and sequential taillights) and broad-shouldered big block V8 power, we can certainly see why. The gorgeous 1969 Shelby GT500 convertible on offer here is actually an amazing recreation that was done to the most exacting standards. This drop top Mustang started life as a six-cylinder car and, originally being from Arizona, sported very solid body panels, doors and undercarriage. As such, it was the perfect candidate for this painstaking endeavor. The owner spared no expense and kept comprehensive records of the entire process. Notably, the restoration/recreation was done by a well-known classic car restoration shop and all the car’s Shelby parts were purchased from Tony Branda's Shelby parts in Pennsylvania. Although the restoration was done eight years ago, it looks fresh thanks to meticulous upkeep and minimal usage since then. Indeed, it was driven less than 1,000 miles since completion. The car’s restoration cost was approximately $90,000, which is confirmed via the massive stack of receipts. This incredible project took almost three years from start to finish according to the family who had the car restored. The Mustang’s beautiful body was finished in stunning Acapulco Blue that is complimented with a white convertible top, white GT500 stripes and brilliant white interior. The chrome and various other bright trim looks fantastic as well. All the details were seen to, with that scooped hood and quarters, the sequential tail lights, front and rear spoilers, fog lamps, five-spoke Shelby wheels and center exhaust port all giving the car a factory correct and fresh appearance. The cars undercarriage is also completely restored, contributing to the “just rolled off the line” appearance with its fresh looking red-oxide primer. Inside, that factory fresh and correct vibe continues with the new bright white upholstery, carpet, door panels, seat covers and roll bar, in addition to the correct Shelby instrument cluster with Stewart Warner gauges, restored dash pad, and “Rim Blow” steering wheel. Indicative of the quality of the restoration, that wheel was restored at a cost of $1000. The real wood “Shelby Snake” shift handle, remote switches for fog lamps and interior lighting all work perfectly while various new hardware and soft wear components, such as door mechanisms, seat belts, weatherstripping and door sill plates add to the “closer you look, better it looks” condition. There is also a full size spare tire and jack assembly neatly stowed in the trunk. Options and features include a C6 automatic transmission, power steering, power front disc brakes, tinted glass, center console, Deluxe interior, clock, power top, driver's side remote mirror and an updated AM/FM/CD audio system. Twist open the hood locks, raise the hood and you can’t help but be impressed by the massive, date coded 1969 428-4V Cobra Jet engine that is as sanitary as the rest of the car. Performance mirrors that of a real Shelby GT500, meaning it’s thrilling. And Shelby and Mustang enthusiasts will recall how the 428 was seriously underrated from the factory at 325 horsepower, a fact that will be plainly evident the first time you step into it. components. A Ford 9" rear with a 3:25 axle ratio gives this Shelby that impressive acceleration as well as great performance on highways and country back roads. Other components were refurbished and replaced as needed, including new suspension, exhaust, gas tank, brake lines, fuel lines and front end. With its combination of incredible detail, condition and performance, this Shelby GT500 convertible recreation gives you all the looks and driving experience of the genuine article at less than half the price.
