Description

Back in 1969, the full-size muscle car wars were fading away, as most performance customers were captivated by the smaller mid-size entries. Still, there were people who wanted full-size space and comfort to go along with a big V8s effortless acceleration. Ford’s Galaxie 500-based XL was their competitor in the heavy-weight category. With its sharp styling, respectable handling, smooth ride and power options ranging all the way up to a brawny 429 V8 with 360 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, the Ford XL was available in a sleek coupe as well as a handsome convertible. Here we have a 1969 Ford XL that is an amazing find, as this already rare car features the convertible body style, the GT package (which includes power front disc brakes, “competition” suspension, performance rear axle ratio, “mag-style” wheel covers and a rim-blow steering wheel) and factory A/C. Although the car's VIN indicates that it was born with a 390 V8, it now has the top-dog 429; evidently a former owner wanted the most potent engine in his XL. Re-finished in a vibrant Red, this XL boasts all its original body panels, which are rock solid and arrow straight. The underside is equally impressive and was coated with an oil-based undercoating that protected it. The car features hideaway headlights and still wears its “mag-style” wheel covers which accent the whitewall radials. The various chrome and stainless-steel trim are also very presentable. Inside, the original upholstery shows some wear but overall is in good condition. And that front bench seat means that six can ride in comfort. Even the original AM/FM radio still resides in the dash and the woodtone interior accents add a luxury vibe. Under the hood, the era-correct 429 dominates the engine bay. Underway, the XL is a smooth operator, proving easy and comfortable to drive and ride in. Step into the 429 and it moves the XL out with authority. Effortless highway cruising makes it a great road trip car, and dropping the top on a nice day provides the additional treat of open-air motoring. For more information or to schedule time to see this nicely preserved example of Ford’s full-size, late-’60s muscle cruiser, just give us a call at 603-627-5595. Financing is offered through our approved lender, interesting trades are welcome and enclosed shipping can be arranged.
