Description

For many muscle car enthusiasts, the 1970 Chevelle SS checks all the boxes. The subtly bulging fenders and hood, semi-fastback roofline and simple but handsome grille and taillights just look so right. And with plenty of big block powerhouses to choose from, these Chevelles made the right sounds and responded swiftly to a right foot. Here we have a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 that turns onlookers’ heads as easily as it spins its rear tires. This beautiful example features the very rare L78 engine option and was treated to a no-expense-spared, frame-off restoration. That high-end restoration is well documented in a binder full of receipts, photographs and notes. Walk around the car with a critical eye and you’ll see rock-solid body panels that are arrow straight and sport a very high-quality finish in the car’s original Gobi Beige color that’s properly accented with Black SS hood- and trunk stripes. The chrome and various emblems are similarly pristine, as are the factory SS wheels that are fitted with OEM-style Firestone Wide Ovals. Underneath, it is so clean we’d eat lasagna off of the floor pans. Swing open the door and it’s as if you stepped into the 1970 Chevelle brochure. The black interior (originally it was Saddle) looks factory fresh from the headliner down to the carpet and Dynomat was added during the restoration to add some quiet refinement to the classic muscle car. So extensive was the restoration that even the gauges were completely refurbished as was the original AM radio and the window mechanisms. Under the hood resides the very rare (only 2,144 built) numbers matching L78 396. As most enthusiasts know, the 396 was enlarged to 402 cubic inches for 1970 but the iconic “396” designation was kept. Carefully kept records document the engine’s originality and tasteful upgrades during the restoration such as a custom forged steel crank and UltraDyne camshaft. The L78 was conservatively rated at 375 hp from the factory. Given that plus the restoration’s upgrades, we’d figure this stout big block is putting out closer to 450 hp. The rest of the powertrain was completely restored as well. As such, the four-speed (fitted with a Hurst shifter) shifts smoothly through the gears and sends the power to the 3:55-geared Positraction rear end. The suspension and brakes were also completely gone through and as a result this SS 396 likely accelerates, handles and brakes better than it did when it rolled off the assembly line.
