1970 Oldsmobile 442

Representing the pinnacle of Oldsmobile’s 442, the 1970 model year brought with it more aggressive styling and the fitment of a standard 455 V8. With ratings of 365 horsepower and a whopping 500 lb-ft of torque, this powerhouse had no problem lighting up tires and pinning passengers to the seat. Solid handling chops were onboard as well, thanks to the 442’s well-tuned suspension. Styling was a strong point as well with its crisply tailored and handsome lines. We are proud to be offering this incredible 1970 442 convertible that underwent a concours-level restoration with receipts totaling over $90,000. The restoration was conducted by a shop known for also restoring vintage Bugattis. This is a numbers-matching car that has only had two owners and among the extensive documentation are two build sheets as well as photos detailing the restoration. The arrow straight body boasts a beautiful respray in the correct “Matador Red” hue, the body panel fit is impressively precise and the chrome and stainless-steel trim are brilliant as well. The underside is so clean that we’d gladly eat lasagna off of it. The factory “SS1” wheels fitted with Firestone white letter radials and a white convertible top that’s only been down a few times for photography purposes finish off the classic 442 in fine style. Sharp-eyed enthusiasts will notice the pinstriping is up higher than would be on a 442 (where it would be around 2/3 of the way down the body) as it was done to the owner/restorer's taste and looks great as it accents the sharp lines of the car. Swing open the door and you’ll swear you’ve just stepped back in time to 1970 and landed at your local Oldsmobile dealer to check out the hottest cars in their showroom. The 442 features bucket seats with the center console and the “Rally Pac” instrumentation, while other option highlights include a tilt wheel and power windows. Everything inside, including the dash, door panels and upholstery are all impressively crisp and clean. The woodgrain accents add a bit of luxury, supporting the 442’s standing as an upscale muscle car. An aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette audio system resides in the dash. Under the broad hood is the matching-numbers 455 that looks as factory fresh as the rest of the car. It sends the power through the standard 3-speed stick (one of only 48 1970 442s so-equipped) and on to the 3.08-geared, “Anti-Spin” rear end. With all the torque this mill cranks out, having three speeds rather than four makes little difference in terms of powerful acceleration while the fun of grabbing gears is still there. The engine runs and sounds as good as it looks, with a proper throaty soundtrack coming out of the dual exhaust trumpets. Out on the road, this burly muscle car handles surprisingly well, thanks to its power steering, power front disc brakes and the 442’s standard front/rear stabilizer bars and firmer suspension calibrations. All in all, this refined beast runs and drives as if you continued that time travel trip with a thrilling test ride. At one of the major auctions this would be a $100k car (plus a 10% buyer's fee).
