The luxury version of the Barracuda, called the Gran Coupe, was created to do battle against the plush versions of its rivals, including the Firebird Esprit and Mustang Grande. Highlights of the Gran Coupe include genuine leather upholstery (front seats) and wood-tone accents on the door panels as well as an overhead console (in the coupe) with warning lights for low fuel and door ajar. Despite its name, the Gran “Coupe” was also available as a convertible. The 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Gran Coupe convertible on offer here is one of the rarest Mopars we’ve ever seen. There were only 596 1970 Gran Coupe convertibles ever made, and this is just one of 66 equipped with the muscular 383 4-barrel “Super Commando” V8 matched to the Torqueflight automatic transmission. This Barracuda was owned by one gentleman who is now in his 80s and no longer drives. This was his dream car back in 1970 and he knew just what he wanted when he ordered it – a fancy and fast Barracuda drop top. In addition to the hi-performance 383 and automatic transmission, other option highlights include a power convertible top, dual chrome racing mirrors, tinted windshield, the Light Group, Rally dash, power steering, and Deluxe wheel covers. When he decided to sell his beloved Barracuda, which now shows 68,681 miles, he made us promise to find it a good home. The Plymouth’s Yellow Gold paint (code DY3) is mostly original, as is the car’s powertrain, interior and top. Being a 51 year-old car, the paint has some expected flaws but remains very presentable. There is one ding on the right front fender. The top is original and along with its glass rear window is in very good condition. Underneath, the Barracuda is rock solid while the trunk, which still has its original space saver spare with inflator, shows some surface rust. The grille and bumpers are in fine shape and even the original wheel covers are still on the car. Inside, there are no splits in the seats and no cracks in the dash. The door panels do show wear but again this car is an all original one-owner car that’s been well maintained. The optional Rally instrument panel graces the dash, as does the sporty 3-spoke steering wheel. The original, numbers-matching 383 “Super Commando” V8 moves the Barracuda out with gusto, while power steering adds to the ease of piloting this sharp Barracuda drop top. The car tracks nice and straight and the manual brakes are smooth and easy to modulate.
