Within the massive range of third generation of Corvettes (aka “C3”) that were produced from 1968 through 1982, many enthusiasts prefer the “steel bumper” cars (1968-1972) thanks to their more powerful engines and classic chrome bumpers front and rear. Later C3s would see the Corvette’s bumpers become flexible color-matched units that melded into the body while luxury features increased and horsepower decreased. Here we have a special “bumper” car – a 1971 Corvette 454 coupe with a 4-speed and A/C. As you can see the car was customized long ago, likely during the 1970s judging by the center stripe and custom pinstriping. Side pipes and Rally wheels with white-letter Hancook tires look great on this big-block-powered ’vette. With the whole "patina" craze nowadays, one could just leave the Corvette as is, with its unique early customization touches paying homage to another era. Or you could of course paint the car whatever color you like. The Corvette appears to have never been hit, the body is in very good shape, the doors open and close with ease and the underside is solid as well. The interior appears to be original and overall in good condition except for the need for carpets and a right-side lower console trim panel. In addition to the A/C (currently not working but all there), the Corvette’s options include power steering, power brakes, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel and an AM/FM stereo radio, which still resides in the center console. Boasting a correct LS5 454 V8 matched to a 4-speed stick, this Corvette checks a few big boxes. The 454 has “back in the day” mods, including an aluminum intake topped with a big Holley carburetor. It drives great and we can’t imagine ever getting bored with the thrill of running through the gears and having that massive torque monster pushing us back in the seat.
