Introduced for 1970, the Datsun 240Z won over car critics with its spirited performance, athletic handling and dashing good looks. In recent years, the 240Z has become a favorite of classic car enthusiasts who love driving as much as they do showing their pride and joy. Most prefer the earlier 240Z as the later 260Z and 280Z had their performance lessened by the increasing emissions standards and their styling marred by massive bumpers. Here we have a 1971 Datsun 240Z that has been tastefully and gradually restored from 2016 through 2020. A restomod approach was taken, improving looks and performance in a restrained manner that makes it appear as though this was how the car should’ve been made. This example’s original California body was treated to a recent respray in gorgeous Sterling Blue metallic, a GM color. New floor pans were installed along with a light under coating to protect under carriage. The body was further refurbished and updated with a front air dam, a new windshield, emblems, door handles, headlights and front grille. During the restoration the rear quarter side windows were customized to be removable, a shortened rear spoiler was added and the bumpers were refinished in the car’s body color. A set of 16-inch Konig wheels fitted with Goodyear Eagle RSA radials round out the Z’s massive curbside appeal. Inside, new upholstery, seat foams, door handles, carpet and headliner, along with restored side trim panels make the interior as minty fresh as the exterior. Added sound insulation in the floors makes for a quieter, cooler cabin while a Pioneer sound system features Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity. A USB charger was installed, and the dash instruments were cleaned and reconditioned however the clock doesn’t work. Note that this 240Z has the very rare hand throttle that the early Zs came with but it was disabled for safety reasons. The cable for it goes with the car. A full set of suit cases are included for the avid traveler. Mechanically, within the nicely detailed engine bay a later series, 2.8-liter engine was rebuilt and installed. Highlights of that rebuild include a polished crank shaft, new Clevite bearings, Hastings piston rings, Melling turbo oil pump, Felpro gaskets, Beck Arnley water pump, Carter fuel pump, new timing chain kit, a Pertronix ignition system and new NGK spark plugs/wires. The SU carbs were also refurbished and tuned and there are new motor mounts, a refurbished radiator and new heater hoses. There are also new belts, a new starter and a new cooling fan. The fuel system was gone through with new fuel lines along with the fuel tank being removed, cleaned and reconditioned. The exhaust system was replaced with an original style system. The suspension system was restored with new KYB shocks, outer tie rod ends, steering rack boots, front sway bar links while all the strut housings have been reconditioned and repainted. There are also new lower ball joints, torsion bar bushings, front inner and outer wheel bearings. The brakes were similarly renewed with new front rotors and brake pads, front brake hoses, rear brakes, shoes and wheel cylinders. As a result of all this, the 240Z starts, runs, drives and handles incredibly well, and there has only been about 650 miles since the overhaul. Please note that there is no heater or AC.
