When most folks first see a mid-1980s TVR, they don’t know what it is. They may be forgiven for thinking it’s a Lotus, as the car was designed by a former Lotus styling manager. Like a Lotus, it’s British and as such has an old-school charm to it, with its somewhat quirky controls and real wood panels in the cozy cockpit. Slightly more than 400 examples were sold in the U.S. from 1983 to 1987, making it no wonder that you probably never saw one. Constructed of fiberglass, the body of this very low mileage (12k miles) example is in excellent condition. The bright red paint sparkles and the factory-issued BBS mesh wheels with their color-matched centers add even more pizzaz to this rarely seen head-turner. With its sleek wedge shape, long hood with hidden headlights and a short rear deck, the TVR looks the part of a proper sports car. It also features a three-way convertible top that can be closed, partially open (with the center top panel removed) or fully open as with a traditional convertible. And like the body, that top is in great shape and it is a breeze to put down and up. Inside the TVR is has black leather upholstery and real wood accents throughout. The seats are in good shape overall, and the door panels and dash are in excellent condition. The real wood trim pieces are in excellent shape apart from the narrow accent strips on the doors. Features include power windows, A/C and a modern, aftermarket Sony AM/FM/CD audio system with Bluetooth capability. Under that long hood beats the heart of a German Ford V6, which specs out at 2.8 liters and around 145 hp. A four-speed stick sends the power to the rear wheels and thanks to the car’s light weight, the TVR feels quicker than its numbers may suggest. With its all-independent suspension, quick steering and four-wheel-disc brakes, this roadster is a blast to pilot through your favorite winding mountain road. Having been gone through with about $2,500 worth of recommissioning work after long storage, this TVR is turn-key ready for you to enjoy. With its unbeatable combination of rarity, style, high fun factor and affordability, this 1986 TVR 280i likely won’t last long.
