The ‘80s were a big decade for the Monte Carlo, as the SS made a righteous comeback. Sporting a smooth, aero-styled front end along with a high-output version of the 305 cubic-inch, 4-barrel V8 running through a four-speed (after ’83) automatic, the new-age Monte SS was a stylish and peppy performer. An optional T-top roof added to the fun by providing the open-air experience of a convertible along with the security of a hardtop. Here we have an amazing 1987 Monte Carlo SS with just 4,180 original miles. And it looks it, from its all-original body panels to its all-original interior and all-original powertrain. The cherry on the sundae is that this is the very rare “Aero Coupe” version with the large, semi-fastback rear window inspired by the NASCAR racing versions of this car that enjoyed success on the big ovals. Finished in White with the Gold SS stripes and the 15-inch factory alloy wheels wearing fairly recent Cooper Cobras, this Monte SS must be seen to be believed. Yes, this car was around when The Joshua Tree album was U2’s latest release. The original paint looks great, as do the stripes and wheels. Note that the original Goodyear Eagle GTs go with the car. Inside, the optional buckets and console along with the standard full instrumentation provide the sporty, muscle car vibe. Of course, everything is in pristine condition, just as you’d expect of a pampered, time capsule example of an ‘80s icon. Other options on this car include AM/FM stereo radio, tilt wheel and tinted glass, but not A/C as the original buyer didn’t want or need it. Fire it up and the original exhaust has a pleasing burble at idle and a muscular soundtrack when you lean on it. As expected, the car starts, runs and drives fantastic. With its 3.73:1 rear end and four-speed automatic making the most of the 305 H.O., the Monte Carlo SS moves out swiftly when prodded and sounds cool doing it. These cars were respectable on a twisty road too, thanks to the F41 sport suspension. It's not everyday you get the opportunity to buy a nearly new example of a car that you wanted “back in the day”, but that opportunity is right here and now.
