Produced initially back in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, the Buick Roadmaster was nothing less than the company’s best. Big, luxurious, stately, and powerful, the flagship of the Buick line gave little away to the Caddies and Lincolns of the time. The prestigious nameplate returned large and in charge in the early ‘90s. Nowadays, these Roadmaster wagons and sedans have developed an almost cultlike following. Those in the know prefer Roadmasters from the 1994 and later model years, which packed the Corvette-derived LT1 V8 whose 260 hp output represented a full 80 more horsepower over the previous Roadmasters. These later model years provide more effortless and spirited performance that’s more in keeping with a car called “Roadmaster”. Here we have a two-owner, ultra-low mileage (just 25,357 miles) and pampered 1996 Buick Roadmaster sedan that also boasts a clean Carfax report. This Roadmaster is rather distinctive as a few old-school luxury car touches, such as the rear fender skirts (with matching chrome trim) and a rear “Continental kit” (simulated spare tire holder) were added early in the car’s life. There’s also a rear decklid spoiler. A close inspection reveals an excellent body with pristine paint and lustrous chrome. Tasteful pinstriping accents the upper character line while the factory aluminum alloy wheels add a sporty touch. Outside, inside and underneath, this car looks more like a very well-cared for 5 year old car, rather than one that’s 25 years old. While most of these Roadmasters were fitted with the optional leather upholstery, this one features the plush velour as well as every luxury feature you could desire. Highlights include a tilt wheel, cruise control, automatic climate control, AM/FM/CD/Cassette audio system and power windows/locks/mirrors/seats. Even the front seats’ lumbar support is power adjusted. Underway, the Roadmaster moves out swiftly when prodded and glides smoothly over severely broken pavement, absorbing the potholes and ruts in stride. Even with that plush ride quality, the Buick’s handling is confident without feeling like a wallowing boat when going around corners. All in all, this is the type of car you can thoroughly enjoy, whether it’s taking the kids out for an ice cream, taking a long road trip or just taking in admiring glances and inquisitive questions at a Cars and Coffee event, this Roadmaster is ready to please its next owner.
